So the big news today is all the accusations of plagiarism with the game "Palworld" and how it rips off Pokemon by using generative AI to generate new Pokemon, infringing on Game Freak's copyrights.
People are calling for a boycott against the game to take a principled stand against AI.
I'll say right off, Palworld was fucking stupid to go this route. You're already going to be attracting the attention of the Eye of Sauron by parodying Pokemon; stealing their assets via AI and crowing about it is the one thing you should NOT do. So they will probably get crushed one way or another.
But in the long run, here's what I think is going to happen:
- Indie developers will be sued / boycotted into oblivion.
- Big Studios will lobby in concert with tech companies to carve out copyright exemptions, and they will get them. Because the tech will be "too big to fail" (not personally saying it is, saying that will be their line)
- They will get their wish and keep using AI in-house, albeit being much quieter about it to avoid moral outrage.
- AI will be thus taken away from the masses (ostensibly to placate those against it) but it will remain another revenue enhancement tool for the rich, and will not go away. Ever. At best it takes some different form so they can plausibly claim it's not scraping data directly.
I did say it was a cynical take.
