It's time for an all-new, all-different Gallifrey

It's time for an all-new, all-different Gallifrey

Radical idea: Bring back Gallifrey, but don't bring back the Gallifrey we knew. Hear me out.

Rather than revive the Gallifrey we all knew, use the premise of a Reality War to create an "All-new, All different" Gallifrey, with its own history and lore that is similar to, yet divorced from the world The Doctor grew up in. One perhaps recreated based on Omega or the Rani's vision of what they felt the Time Lords should be or were - perhaps the War Games level Time Lords.

"Why?" You might ask. "No one cares about Gallifrey!"

If that's you, please stop reading now, this blog is not for you. 🤣 Gallifrey and its lore does have its fans, and I count myself among that number. I feel that it's constant destruction is a failure of imagination - the first time made sense as a plot device to re-introduce the concepts of the Doctor's personal world, but to do it again after the heroics of the 50th anniversary just smacks of shock value and throwing away a toy from the toybox just because one writer didn't find value in it.

The benefits of making a new Gallifrey would be manifold:

1 - The Doctor would be an outsider from his people once more.

His people are back, but they're not his people any more - at least the society he remembered.. That tension can be mined. his relationship with them could be fraught. They might consider him an embarrassment, or someone to watch / use carefully.

2 - The "we wrote Gallifrey into a corner by making the universe hate it in the Time War" problem is solved.

The Reality War would remove the Time War from mass consciousness. Without that knowledge, there's no reason to hide the planet (unless the Time Lords want to be recluses).  The Doctor would still have lived it, and would remember those experiences and the trauma, but those things are now internal to him and not the universe at large.

3 - The history of the Gallifreyan people, and the legacy of the Doctor is no longer defined by him being the Timeless Child.

The Timeless Child plot can remain, but the Doctor is no longer the super-special chosen one of his people. He's an outsider and they developed Time Lord-ness in a different way. The angst of his abandonment can still be mined and he's still the Timeless Child being if that needs to be used for whatever reason, but now he's genetically unique.

Gallifreyan lore, and the Shobogans and the Time Lords can be reset, redefined and plumbed.

4- This "All-New, All-Different" Gallifrey could once more be a plot device to put the Doctor in really touchy situations.

This Gallifrey's relationship with the universe could be completely different than anything that's come before. Imagine the Doctor needing to step in to curb the excesses of an interventionist Gallifrey, for instance. Or working for them to tackle complex historical problems. Or to use them as a plot device to do high-concept horror at the edges of science and technology and time?

Honestly, if a writer doesn't want to deal with Gallifrey, just leave it alone. It's not like the thing needs to be mentioned all the time, and the "Last of the Time Lords" thing has become overplayed and odious; leave the toy in the toybox for others who want to play with it.

Will RTD give me what I want and revive / recreate Gallifrey later today? I've no idea. But I'm writing this now so I can pat myself on the back if he does, or so I can scowl irritatedly and point to this screed the next time I want to advocate for its restoration.

~explanation~

I'm a snarky, semi-horrible human being given to penning intentionally bad epic slashfiction involving improbable objects and individuals, with the ultimate ambition of befouling Kindle with it one day, which is ostensibly what this blog is for.

In practice, however, it tends to mainly be a circular file for my various thoughts and ideas, some whimsical and others not, in addition to my various Photoshop experiments, mainly collections of what I originally generated for Twitter but now do for Mastodon Threads Bluesky thanks to Twitter becoming a fascist hellscape.

I also have a sideproject doing art for my addition to Doctor Who fanon, Karnian Script which is a more sigil-based, witchy take on Galifreyan variants.
